What is textile TPU film? Types, uses and buying basics

What textile TPU film is, how its types differ and what to define before ordering film for badges, logos and sew-free apparel parts.

Search for “TPU film” and you will mostly find phone screen protectors, automotive paint protection film and 3D printing filament. In textiles, TPU film has a much narrower job: it is the core material for badges, logos and sew-free parts. This guide explains, for sourcing and product development teams at apparel and sportswear brands, what textile TPU film is, how the types differ and what to define before you order.

What is textile TPU film?

TPU stands for thermoplastic polyurethane: a rubber-like, elastic polymer that softens when heated and holds its shape once cooled. For textiles it is supplied as thin film on rolls. It stretches with the fabric, keeps its form through washing and can be bonded with heat or high-frequency (HF) energy, which is why it dominates badge and logo work.

It is often confused with PVC film. PVC usually gets its flexibility from plasticisers, and as those migrate out over time the material can stiffen. TPU is elastic by its own polymer structure, so the hand stays more stable over the garment’s life. That matters most in sportswear that flexes constantly.

Types: polymer base and surface

Two practical ways to tell TPU films apart:

Where it is used

What to define before ordering

  1. Application method: HF welding or heat press? The film must suit it.
  2. Fabric type and elastane content.
  3. Target wash temperature, number of cycles and any dry-cleaning requirement.
  4. Colour, finish and micron; a reference sample if you need a custom colour.
  5. The adhesive layer and carrier film it will be used with.
  6. Tests for sample approval: washing, yellowing and edge hold.

Textile TPU film performs most consistently when treated as part of a set with its adhesive layer and carrier, not as a stand-alone item. For scenario-based selection see the TPU selection guide; for colours and finishes see the Premium TPU film page.
